An important update
Are you aware that changes are about to happen to the driving test booking process? At Training Wheelz, we want to make sure you have the most up-to-date information. Your journey to getting your full licence needs to be as smooth as possible.
We noe have more information to add to the blog post earlier this year on this.
May 12th 2026 is the important date when the booking system changes. Here is everything you need to know.
The Big Change: Only you can book your test
Historically, many driving schools and instructors were able to book tests on behalf of their students. This was often helpful for managing schedules. To try and ensure the system remains fair and transparent for everyone, the DVSA has changed its policy.
From now on, all practical driving tests must be booked exclusively by you – the learner.
This means your instructor can no longer log in and book a slot for you. While we are still here to guide you on when we think you’re ready, the actual booking—and the payment of the DVSA fee—is now officially your responsibility.
In reality this is likely to mean you will need to log into the DVSA booking system at 6am on a Monday morning to have any chance of booking a test! The DVSA opens the booking system up to 24 weeks ahead so you need to log in early and then hope you are not kept waiting too long in the queue. We have heard of people being 20,000 in the queues when they log on even just 10 minutes after 6am! Usually, by lunchtime on the Monday all tests for that week are gone!
Don’t Forget Your Instructor’s ADI Number
Even though you are doing the booking, your instructor is still a vital part of the process. When you book your test online, you will see an option to enter your instructor’s Personal Reference Number (ADI Number).
We strongly advise you to enter this number. This helps to prevent double-bookings and ensures that the car you’ve been practicing in is actually available for your specific time slot. If you aren’t sure what your instructor’s ADI number is, just ask them during your next lesson.
Why Is This Happening?
The goal is simple: to give learners more control and to reduce the influence of automated booking “bots” and third-party resellers. By requiring the student to book directly, the DVSA aims to make more slots available to the people who actually need them. The jury is definitely out as to whether this will make much of a difference but let’s hope so.
A Quick Checklist for Booking:
- Talk to your instructor first: It is very important you are both in agreement that you are at test standard.
- Get the ADI Number: Have your instructor’s ADI number ready before you log on.
- Use the official site: Always book through the official gov.uk website to avoid extra “administration fees” from unofficial third-party sites.
- Check the car availability: Once you’ve secured a date, confirm it with your instructor immediately so they can block out that time in their diary.
We’re Here to Help
We know that booking a test can be a bit nerve-wracking, especially with these new rules. If you have any questions about how to navigate the gov.uk booking system please make sure you speak with your instructor. This also applies if the DVSA cancels a test at short notice.
We’ve also updated the Terms and Conditions in our Total Drive app to reflect these changes, so if you who are learning with us please make sure you have updated your app and accepted the revised version.
Ready to get that test booked? Let’s get you on the road!
